Buying guide 04 · Make a useful offer

Your target price. A fair starting point.

Build a clear buying brief, choose a sensible all-in target and give a local shop something it can respond to.

Chief negotiator. Practising the ‘could you do a little better?’ face.
The useful bit, upfront

Base your target on a comparable, available offer and make clear what is included. The retailer can accept, counter or decline.

‘What is your best price?’ gives a shop very little to work with. A specific product, an honest budget and a realistic buying timescale make a more useful enquiry. A fair agreement should suit both you and the retailer; no amount of enthusiastic tail-wagging guarantees a discount.

Find a like-for-like starting point

Use a current offer you can genuinely buy: same model, generation, capacity, condition and essential accessories. Include delivery or collection costs. Check that it is in stock for your location and that any discount is available to you. Save the link and the time you checked it.

A discontinued listing, out-of-stock price or private seller’s used item may not be a fair comparison with a shop’s new product and service. A retailer may also be unable to match a marketplace seller’s terms. Explain the comparison rather than claiming that every lower number is an equivalent offer.

Set your target and your ceiling separately

Your target is the total you would be happy to pay; your ceiling is your actual maximum. Keep some room to consider a counteroffer if there is value in collection, support or included accessories. Do not set a target above what you can comfortably afford, and do not confuse an advertised monthly payment with the total cost.

There is no universal haggling percentage. Retailers have different margins and may have little room on a particular item. If a cash discount is not possible, ask whether a genuinely useful accessory, delivery or setup can be included. Do not accept unwanted extras simply because they have a large claimed value.

Turn a price into a clear request

Illustrative enquiry — not a retailer quote

Comparable online offer: £320 delivered for the exact new model. Personal maximum budget: £320.

‘I’m looking for [exact model and variant], new, with the standard accessories. My target is £300 total for collection this week. Can you offer that, or send your best all-in price and warranty details?’

£300 is an example, not a recommended discount formula. A £310 collection offer could be worth considering, but check travel costs and do not assume that an enquiry commits you to purchase.

Give the shop enough detail to answer once

  • Exact product and acceptable condition; list any alternatives separately.
  • Target total, including VAT and any required delivery or accessories.
  • Collection area or delivery needs and your realistic buying deadline.
  • Any essential warranty or support requirements.
  • A request for stock confirmation, offer expiry and the retailer’s final terms.

Read the counteroffer, not just its number

Ask whether the quote is for the exact item, whether stock is held, how long the price lasts and what payment or deposit terms apply. A different model or refurbished substitute should be identified as an alternative, not silently treated as a match. If the terms do not suit you, decline politely.

PriceHaggle AI’s local service is an early pilot for matching buying briefs with participating retailers. Where enabled, you verify your email before enquiries are sent, and participating shops may return an offer. Coverage, replies and savings are not guaranteed. Selecting an offer is not an automatic purchase: check the retailer’s final terms before paying.

Know what happens to your request

Use a working email address so you can receive verification and any updates. Review what the request form says will be shared before submitting. Retailer participation and referral arrangements are separate from your target price; there is no guarantee that every nearby shop is enrolled or will respond.

Our friendly buying buddy helps you describe the purchase. It cannot promise stock, bind a retailer to a price or spend money on your behalf. Start by identifying the product, then choose the local-retailer or better-price option on the results page.
