Buying guide 01 · Get the match right
Right model. Right fit. No expensive surprises.
Decode model names, choose the storage you need and make sure every offer is for the same thing.
Write down the exact model, the variants that matter and the condition you will accept before comparing prices.
A familiar name on a listing is a starting point, not a complete match. Two products can look identical while differing in generation, storage, connectivity or included accessories. The cheapest offer is only useful if it buys the product you actually want.
Start with a model, not just a brand
Separate the product family from the exact model. ‘iPad’ is a family; a screen size, generation or chip, storage and connectivity describe a much narrower choice. For headphones, look for the full model number and generation. For a laptop, check the processor, memory and storage, rather than relying on the range name.
A manufacturer part number or GTIN/EAN barcode can help match listings, but still inspect the variant and bundle. A seller may use a generic title or a shared product page. If the title, specification and photographs disagree, ask the seller to clarify before paying.
Buy capacity for your habits
Check how much storage you use on your current device, then allow room for the photos, apps, games and offline files you expect to add. Cloud storage may reduce local needs, but it can introduce a subscription cost and requires an internet connection for some files.
Memory (RAM) and storage are different: more storage holds more files; RAM affects how a device handles active tasks. Check whether either can be upgraded. A low initial price can be poor value if you soon need to replace a device that cannot grow with your needs.
- Mostly browsing and streaming? Check the apps’ requirements before paying for top specifications.
- Editing video, downloading large games or keeping years of photos offline? Assess storage and performance together.
- Buying a phone or tablet? Decide whether cellular connectivity is necessary and include any ongoing data cost.
Decide what is essential and what is flexible
List your must-haves first: compatibility, screen size, unlocked status, keyboard layout or fit. Put preferences such as colour on a separate list. Being flexible about a preference can widen your options without accepting a product that does not do the job.
Include condition explicitly: new, refurbished or either. Check what comes in the box, whether the item is intended for the UK market, and whether its charger, network support and warranty work for you. ‘New other’, ‘open box’ and ‘ex-display’ deserve a closer look at the seller’s description.
A better search brief
Illustrative brief — not a live product offer
‘A cheap tablet’ leaves almost everything open.
‘Apple iPad Air 11-inch M3, 256 GB, Wi-Fi, new; any colour; UK model; collection or delivery by Friday.’
If you do not know the model yet, start with your use and budget. Once you choose, compare that exact specification across sellers.
Before you press ‘find prices’
For a known catalogue model, choose and confirm its configuration directly. An unfamiliar description may need clarification from the buying assistant before you confirm it. Neither route verifies a retailer’s stock: your final check of the retailer’s listing still matters.
- Confirm the model and generation, then check capacity, size and connectivity.
- Choose acceptable condition and any required accessories.
- Read the seller’s written specifications, not just the headline or image.
- Keep flexible preferences separate so a retailer can suggest a clearly labelled alternative.
Save yourself a surprise
