Buying guide 07 · Choose around your real life

Wi-Fi or Cellular? Choose how your iPad will get online.

Work out whether home Wi-Fi, a phone hotspot or an iPad mobile-data plan fits your day. Compare hardware, eSIM, coverage and the full ongoing cost.

Your buying buddy. Very interested in the packaging.
The useful bit, upfront

A Wi-Fi iPad connects through a Wi-Fi network. A Wi-Fi + Cellular model can also connect using its own compatible mobile-data service. You do not need the Cellular version just to use home Wi-Fi.

Wi-Fi and Wi-Fi + Cellular can appear beside the same iPad model name, but they are different hardware versions. Start with where you need the internet and whether your phone will be nearby. This guide helps you make that choice before comparing retailer offers; it does not recommend a network or promise coverage.

What is the difference?

A Wi-Fi iPad connects through a Wi-Fi network. A Wi-Fi + Cellular model can also connect using its own compatible mobile-data service. You do not need the Cellular version just to use home Wi-Fi.

Cellular describes the hardware capability, not an included data allowance. Check whether a retailer is selling the tablet alone or a contract bundle. A low upfront contract payment is not the complete price of buying the tablet.

Adding a data plan later does not turn a Wi-Fi-only iPad into a Cellular model. Choose the hardware first, then check the plan separately.

Mostly reading or watching downloads while travellingCheck offline use before paying for connectivityThe app permits downloads and works offline when you need it.

Think about the places where you need to go online, rather than occasional possibilities. Include whether you can use a phone hotspot and whether someone can help set it up if needed.

Could your phone supply the connection?

A compatible phone can share its mobile-data connection as a Wi-Fi hotspot. A Wi-Fi-only iPad can join that network, subject to the phone and network provider supporting it. The phone needs a working mobile-data connection; a hotspot does not create coverage where none exists.

Try connecting the tablet and opening the apps you need before relying on it for a journey. Consider battery use, your phone staying nearby and the extra steps involved. Check your provider permits tethering and what happens when you reach the data allowance.

Apple’s Instant Hotspot can simplify connecting compatible Apple devices when its requirements are met. An Android phone uses its own hotspot settings. Ask the phone or network provider for the appropriate instructions.

Check eSIM and network compatibility on the exact model

The Cellular versions of the A16 iPad, M3 iPad Air and A17 Pro iPad mini in our starter catalogue use eSIM rather than a physical SIM card. Older iPads and regional variants can differ. Confirm the full model and manufacturer specification before buying, especially for an imported or refurbished listing.

Ask the network provider whether it supports that iPad and the plan you want. Check coverage in the places you actually use it, activation requirements, renewal terms and roaming costs. A device supporting a network technology does not guarantee a particular speed or signal.

Compare the hardware and ongoing costs separately

For the hardware comparison, hold the model, screen size, storage, condition and included accessories constant. Then compare Wi-Fi with Cellular. Do not compare a Wi-Fi price with a contract instalment as if they bought the same thing.

For your own budget, include any activation fee, minimum plan term, renewals and expected extra data or roaming costs. If using a phone hotspot means changing your existing plan, include that extra cost too. Our retailer price results do not calculate a personalised mobile-plan total.

Make a choice you can explain

Illustrative buying brief — not a retailer offer

“I want an iPad for video calls at home and films on the train.”

“Home Wi-Fi covers my video calls. I can download films before travelling and use my phone hotspot occasionally. I will compare the Wi-Fi version first.”

Another buyer who regularly needs internet without a phone may prefer Cellular. The useful choice follows the way you will use it.
