Buying guide 05 · Choose around your real life
128 GB or 256 GB? Start with what you actually keep.
Choose iPad storage around apps, offline films, games and creative files. Understand local storage, cloud costs and room to grow before comparing offers.
Check your current storage use, estimate what you want to keep offline and leave some room. Extra storage is useful when you will use it, not simply because the number is bigger.
Two iPads can have the same model name and different capacities. A tablet used mainly for browsing and streaming has different needs from one holding large games, downloaded films or creative projects. This is a decision guide, not a storage benchmark or a promise that one capacity suits everyone.
Start with the device you already use
Check your current storage use, estimate what you want to keep offline and leave some room. Extra storage is useful when you will use it, not simply because the number is bigger.
On an existing iPad, open Settings, then General, then iPad Storage. Look at the total used and the largest apps. Consider whether that reflects normal use or whether you recently removed files to make room. Apple explains the storage categories in the source linked below.
For a first tablet, list essential apps, school or work documents, photos, games and travel downloads instead. The operating system and apps use part of the advertised capacity, so do not plan on filling every advertised gigabyte with your own files.
Decide what needs to work without the internet
Streaming a film and downloading it for a journey have different storage demands. The same applies to music and course materials. Plan for the offline collection you want to keep at once, rather than everything you might ever watch.
Games and creative projects can also be large, and their sizes vary. Check the apps or files you actually expect to use. More storage can reduce the need to remove things regularly; it does not by itself make a processor faster or improve a display.
Cloud space and device space are different
A cloud subscription does not increase the physical storage inside the tablet. Downloaded cloud files still occupy local space. Consider internet availability, offline behaviour and continuing subscription costs before treating cloud storage as a substitute.
Choose a backup method separately. Having enough space on the tablet is not a backup plan, and deleting synced files can have consequences elsewhere. Follow the instructions for the service you use.
Turn the list into a capacity decision
Illustrative planning example — not a product benchmark
One buyer expects to keep about 35 GB of existing content and add about 25 GB of downloads and projects.
That is a starting estimate of around 60 GB, before allowing for the system, future apps and growth. Compare it with usable room and your willingness to manage files.
These are invented planning quantities, not measured app sizes or promised free space on a particular iPad.
Compare the same model at both capacities
Check the extra purchase cost for the storage upgrade on the same generation, screen size, connection and condition. A cheaper used model with more storage is different from a new model with less. Warranty, battery condition and accessories can change the value.
Choose the capacity before comparing retailer offers. Our starter catalogue includes supported configurations for the A16 iPad, M3 iPad Air and A17 Pro iPad mini. It is not a complete list of every current model or listing.
