Buying guide 03 · Do the whole sum

A small price. A surprisingly big parcel bill.

Add delivery, essential extras and collection costs before deciding which price is really the best deal.

Head of deliveries. A little too interested in the packaging.
The useful bit, upfront

Compare what you will actually pay to get the same usable product, when you need it, rather than the headline price alone.

An attractive product price can change at checkout. Postcode restrictions, delivery charges, missing accessories or a long collection trip can make a seemingly cheaper offer cost more. Keep cash costs separate from the convenience and service you value, so you can make a conscious trade-off.

Use one consistent total

Start with the price including applicable VAT, add delivery to your postcode and the essentials needed to use the item. Subtract only discounts you qualify for and can apply to that exact purchase. Treat cashback that has not been confirmed as a possible bonus rather than guaranteed money off.

Check whether a code works on that model, condition and seller. Minimum-spend rules, excluded brands and membership requirements can change the calculation. Do not buy an unwanted extra just to reach a ‘free delivery’ threshold without comparing the totals.

Product price + delivery + essential extras − confirmed discount = checkout total

Collection has a cost too

For collection, add the travel and parking costs you will actually incur. Consider your time separately. A nearby shop may offer a convenient demonstration or an easy place to resolve a problem; those can be valuable even when they are not a cash discount.

Confirm the exact item is available at the branch, the opening hours and the reservation period before travelling. An enquiry or quote is not a reservation unless the retailer says so. Check whether you pay online or in store: the way the contract is formed can affect cancellation rights, not simply the fact that you collect.

The lowest headline price does not always win

Illustrative costs only — not current retailer offers
OptionProductDelivery / travelEssential extraCash total
Online A£299£9 delivery£15 adapter£323
Online B£315£0 deliveryIncluded£315
Local collection£305£6 travelIncluded£311

In this example, local collection has the lowest cash total. Online B may still suit you better if the trip is inconvenient. The comparison only works because the model, condition and required accessory are the same.

Check the promise behind the delivery date

  • Is the date estimated or specifically agreed, and does it meet your deadline?
  • Is delivery available to your postcode, with any surcharge included?
  • For bulky items, does the price cover the service you need, such as a room delivery, installation or old-item removal?
  • Who is selling the item? On a marketplace, the seller may be a separate trader rather than the platform itself.
  • What happens if the parcel is lost, damaged or late? Keep your order and contact the seller promptly.

Think one step beyond checkout

For printers, coffee machines and other products with repeat purchases, compare running costs as well as the initial spend. For connected devices, consider necessary subscriptions and support. Avoid adding optional cover automatically: read what it offers alongside existing rights and any other cover you have.

When PriceHaggle AI shows an offer, check its included costs and confirm the final total on the retailer’s checkout. A price can change, a voucher can expire and stock can sell out. An affiliate link may earn us commission on a qualifying purchase; it is not a guarantee of the lowest price across the whole market.
