Active noise cancelling vs sound isolation: what you are paying for
How a good ear-tip seal and active noise cancelling work together, what ANC costs in battery life, and three checks before you buy earbuds.
Treat the seal as the foundation and ANC as an extra layer. If your days are spent on buses, trains or in busy offices, ANC can be worth it, but check the battery figures with ANC switched on and make sure the ear tips fit you.
Many earbuds are sold as blocking out noise, but two different things are going on. Sound isolation is passive: the ear tip seals your ear canal and physically stops some sound getting in. Active noise cancelling (ANC) is electronic: microphones listen to the noise around you and the earbuds try to counter it. This guide explains how the two depend on each other, so you can decide whether ANC is worth having for your daily routine.
The seal does more than you might think
A loose earbud lets outside noise leak in, whatever electronics it has. Manufacturers say so themselves. Soundcore's guidance for its R50i NC earbuds tells owners to try different ear-tip sizes until they get a tight seal, to mix sizes between ears if needed, and to run a fit test in its app.
What ANC adds and what it costs
ANC is best thought of as an extra layer on top of a good seal. Headline figures such as "up to 42 dB" are the manufacturer's own maximum claims, not a promise for every ear or every noise, so use them for rough comparison only.
The ongoing cost is battery life. Anker lists the R50i NC at up to 10 hours per charge and 45 hours with the case with ANC off, falling to 7 hours and 30 hours with ANC on. Always compare battery claims for the mode you will actually use.
Example: soundcore R50i NC
As an example from our catalogue, the soundcore R50i NC in black offers adaptive ANC, which Anker says adjusts its level to your surroundings, plus a Transparency mode for hearing announcements without taking the earbuds out. That mix suits commuters who want quiet on the move but still need to hear what is going on. If you mostly listen at home, a well-fitting earbud without ANC may be enough.

Your quick buying checklist
- Check which ear-tip sizes come in the box, and whether the maker offers a fit test.
- Compare battery life with ANC switched on, not only the headline figure.
- Check whether there is a transparency or ambient mode if you need to hear announcements or traffic.
